Understanding what’s available when it comes to Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare supplement plans is half the battle. At Iron Plan Solutions, we’re here to help! We can explain Parts A, B, C and D, and help you simplify the complex. Unlike your Social Security benefit, which you can wait to file for, Medicare gives you a seven-month window to file, which is three months before your 65th birthday, and three months after. Fail to file by age 65 and you could pay a penalty plus higher health care premiums for life. (You should probably file for Part A—free to most people—even if you are still working and have health care coverage through your employer that qualifies.)
Importantly, there is a two-year lookback on your MAGI (modified adjusted gross income) when it comes to the premium you and your spouse will have to pay for Medicare. It is definitely not free, and those with higher incomes may have to pay more than twice as much because of something called IRMAA (income-related monthly adjustment amount.) If we can help you with retirement planning well before you reach age 65, we may be able to find ways to help you keep your income lower when you are age 63 for this reason.
